Model of integrity to which we strive.

Sorry for the delay in the posting.  Friday was a late day and we were busy this morning to get on the road on time.
On Friday morning we had very little traffic and a great drive in.  Once there we had a quick breakfast and prayed for Pastor Tom.

While waiting in line to get in I overheard a story from the man in sunglasses below.  He lived in South Dakota and became convicted that he needed to enter ministry.

So after speaking with his wife and family they agreed.  He put is house up for sale and enrolled in the Master’s Seminary.  He moved to LA, with no job and his old house still on the market.   He stated things were not easy, but he got a job and things were working out.  He seemed overjoyed with his direction.

The Countryside team saved us a seat and we were able to sit just a few rows back from Pastor John M.

Tom was the first speaker of the day.  During his message I recalled that Tom had left dinner early the evening before to prepare with prayer and meditate.

He started with the rhetorical statement; “ I am not the one going crazy”.  Tom noted that he had considered several texts prior to settling on Matt 23.  He then described his personal struggle with blind-spots and described dealing with 90% damage to his right eye.  His intent was to help us all to consider our own blind spots in terms of our personal commitment to integrity.  The message was classic Tom, deliberate and clear.   As he  progressed, the focus became incrementally more sturdy and uncomfortable.  I began to notice the fidgetiness of folks in the pews and coughing that grew at least a little more distracting.  At first I felt Tom was like a sniper taking his shots with all of us.  Then I changed my mind-he was really more intimate in his efforts.  More surgeon like.  Tom is a man that does not tolerate error in word or person and is contagious with sharing that understanding.  In short, it was very, very good.  In terms of meaning and content-it was the finest message of the event and worthy of the travel.

Next came lunch.   On deck was Sharky’s.   They served 3500 men with burritos, chips, salsa and cookies in ~25 minutes.  It was an amazing process and good food.  A full burrito with rice, that was a little dryer with less cheese than we get in Texas, but still full and delicious.  Jason also met some new Navy friends.

When we finished lunch a quick pass for gifts and book bargains (they had JM’s book on Inerrancy for $5 each!). We made our way back into the Worship Center for the Q&A Session.
Prior to lunch there was a line of folks waiting to speak with Pastor Tom.  When we returned there was again a line waiting to speak with him.  Below is the after-lunch line…  Not sure if he ever had lunch.  But he was so kind to everyone.

Just a quick note.   There were 800 folks from Grace Church that were working for us as volunteers.  They were amazing and tireless.  Over the three days some of the folks were there every day and all day.  Add to this the days of work and preparation that occurred in advance; it is such an amazing testimony to the power of the Word to change lives.  We were awash in a shared love of Christ and willing acts of sacrifice. On Thursday we mentioned the hot dogs.  These were from Burt.  He was a founder at Grace and build the Worship Center.  Burt himself was there.  Not as person of stature but as a servant.  Burt was personally doing the most menial jobs there was to be done in his team.

During the Q&A there were two points that we will highlight:
JM has a new book coming out.  The title is “Being a Dad Who Leads”.  The publisher has pushed back because the title has too much of a reverence to ‘gender and authority’.  The pushback is from the Christian Bookstores….
Al Mohler when on to explain a conversation he had this week.  A close, Christian friend with young children recounted a story.  While the man was discussing various LGBT issues and topics with his wife, his 9 year old son interrupted and corrected his father “that’s hate speech dad…”
There is a message that is clearly penetrating the conscience of even those in Christian families.

Now for Paul Washer.  This was an unexpected and powerful experience.  I have Heard Paul before but was not prepared for his message.  This must be in some small way what it was like to hear one of the prophets from the OT.  This man is lean, measured and deliberate in his delivery.  Every word used demonstrated a passion for people and a love for Christ.  Paul is an athlete in his delivery.  At times seething with a measured rage that is rooted in compassion; no doubt Paul hates sin and fears God.  During the message there were several distractions that bubbled up-there were no match for his message.  When he was complete, many were in tears, most fought back the tears.  All were exhausted and spent.  Pairing Paul with Tom on the last day was providentially wonderful and helpful in terms of spiritual growth.

The food trucks awaited us for dinner.  The rain had stopped and a wide spectrum of food awaited us.  The favorite for Texans was The Grilled Cheese Truck and a ½ doz cream puffs for desert.

On one of the food trucks I noticed a reminder of just how much the message is still needed even on the campus of Grace.

In-Progress a quick  lesson on horticulture from the Schuh family.
Outside the Worship Center Mark and Katie are noted as missionaries.

Jason had mentioned that he was looking for someone from Haiti.  Right after I took this photo, I was standing in line to get in.
A man came up, stepped right in front of me.  He bent down and looked at my badge. Raised his head and stated; “Bryint, I am Jon Rony and I am here from Haiti”.  Just like that.  More to share when we see you.

We seated and prepared to hear the final session.  The music was beautiful, sublime and Christ Glorifying.

Dr. John M. Completed his outline of the Doctrines contained in John 17. It was thorough and powerful.  John also noted that next year in February will be a Shepherd’s Conference that will focus on the Reformation. Jason is already planning for a return.  I could write so very much more, but you should download the podcast of John.

Finally let me share a list of quotes that stood out just from this one day:
  • with 3 years of training, these 11 men turned the world upside down.
  • Not having enough patience with people
  • Do you love the prominent positions you enjoy?
  • The World’s view is not different-it is opposed to us
  • Operate in the residue of Christian world view
  • Illusion of neutrality
  • Ruthlessly Biblical
  • We are Imputationists
  • Like all wars we have lost another word
  • Stand in Christ, between God and the devil for your people
  • Don’t overestimate your importance.
  • The only thing from the Navigators worth reading are my books.
  • Beauty that is so sharp it cuts.
  • If only we could have been in hell a short-while
  • Is there not a person I can sow my heart with Christ?
  • All language fails to explain
  • A sacrifice so pleasing it satisfies His wrath
  • Does that make you tremble?
  • How can I breath in the light of this truth?
  • Easter is coming and I dread it for the sermons I will hear
  • Sir, the wrath of almighty God was in the cup!
  • Thou expect you shall pay the last mite
  • Now DO YOUR WORK!

We love you all.  Our hearts ache and cherish the moments tomorrow when we can see your face.  Thanks so much for your love, counsel and help in making this happen for us.   We are changed.

Men of whom this world is not worthy

Yesterday morning was such a delight.  We had collapsed into bed the night before, spent and exhausted.  When we arrived the nearby parking lot was full and we parked down the street.  A pretty good hike to the conf, but we were very stoked for the day.  Early on we spotted a badge from Hati.  Jason and I struck up a conversation and exchanged contact information with them for possible future help with ministry in Hati.  After some morning bfast snacks Nate and I tred to locate shade to minimize sweating too early in the day.  The first speaker of the day was the assistant to Dr. John M; Nathan.  The topic was how to measure ministry success.  It is from this message when Nathan explored Heb 11:38 that this title is taken from.  The one overwhelming thought from this even so far has been this thought.  There are so many men here that seriously care about holiness and obedience.  In today's world that is an a position that few will tollerate and fewer still will encourage.

After Nathan, we had lunch-In/Out burgers.  They were great and delicious.  In addition one of the founding members of the Church has a hit dog business.  He came in and grilled dogs for everyone.  Some folks had a dog and an In/Out burger, or maybe even two burgers....

After lunch we heard Al Mohler explain when to leave a Church or ministry.  Please listen to it.   The section when Mr. Mohler explains the reason and implications when he advised someone he cares for that 'no, we are not brothers in Christ..'.  It was very powerful.

The next session was how to minister those obedient to Islam.  The first slide had a photo of Isis.  A man in the audiance could not help himself and shouted out "those are my people, those are my people..".  He went on to explain in a middle East accent that the folks beheaded were part of his Church.  The presentation and message was powerful.  Afterwards there were so many questions the speaker just finally had to dismiss us.

Back to Al Mohler for the closing.  We sat 3 rows back from Dr. John M. and just in front of us was Tony Evans, who knew?  Just before Al a woman sang a sorrowful spiritual that was gripping in it's emotion.  Al then described why the most important qualification of any pastor is a sincere fear of God.  More than anything else, fear is the root of good pastors.

The Countryside group hosted us again for a wonderful time of fellowship and dinner. Not sure that will happen this evening.  Tom wants sushi.  If anyone was worthy of tollerating sushi for their company it would be pastor Tom.  We will see.  We are starting the day with fellowship. Marv came over. Nate is still asleep.  Mark, Jason and Marv are discussion coffee and air line check valves..  it will be a great day.  We are so looking forward to hearing Pastor Tom.  Please be in prayer for him and his message this morning.

Far away, not out of mind

Nate was the driver yesterday morning. We slowed down just once on the I5.  We were so excited to see what awaits.  The campus is dense.  Seems more so with 3500 men on site.  The first thing that impressed us was the overwheming kindness and love.  We were awash in lavish treatment.

The bookstore is 8K sf tent, packed with books at wholesale prices.  It is also the place we receive our free box of books!  Did I mention the lavish treatment?

All the sessions start with music and the voices of hymms supported only by men is compelling.  The first opening message from John M. Set the mark.  Key the the points he shared was the reminder that the Lords Prayer is not for the Lord.  It is for us.  The Lord does not prayer for protection from sin...  TRUE, Simple, Clear and weighty.  Then there was more.  John noted that 63 countries were watching the streaming with 63000 conections live.  Over 50 coutries were represented on-site.  Curiously no one from Main or Vermont.  They need our prayers.

We broke for lunch.  The lunch was chicken and beef not a simple box lunch.  The serving was very fast but still took some time.  We did not get to attend the lunch sessions...  After lunch we enjoyed the scathing wit of Phil J.  Too much there to note, but a must see.  FYI... Phil is more than a little annoyed by zip lines "swami's of style".  Last point from Phil, he gave us a new word; Narrci-gesis.  Definition:  A pastor whom prosseses a strong grasp of clinical self-worth but a vacuity of knowledge related to any scriptural content.

Steve L. was next. There was a small event just prior to Steve's prentation. We met some folks.  From that meeting, there was some potential to have derailed us, but Providence and Wisdom prevailed.  The result is we watched Steve in overflow separate from Marv and Nate.  Not perfect but still very good.  It also gave Nate a chance to minister with 'incremental physicality'.  What a great man Jason's brother is.
Just before Steve we heard a song from a soprano ned Grace.  It was captivating and moving.  Her singing was a kinf tug that helped to re-center our minds and hearts.

Also, being in overflow we were the only ones that had a hymnal.  That provided the opportunity for Jason and I to sing a duet.  It was masterful. At the moments when we were on the same line.  Becky would have been proud.

Back to Steve, my goodness.  He outlined Psalm 2 and the presented a tsunami of structured indignation and mercy. It was potent and powerful. It was also a comfort and well applied to TODAY.

The Master's Chorale was amazing.  Pastor Tom's daughter was there.  If it is on streaming to watch, please do.

Ligon D. closed with and exigesis of Rom 8:32.  It was sorrowful in the context of how little we really understand, not because we do not have the time, but because we do not make the effort.

Mark set us up to have dinner with the Countryside folks.  What a great time of fellowship and love.  There is so much more to share when we see you.  In Thess, there is the repeated thought, of longing to see your face.  That is so very real for us.

The title of this post is a quote fron John regarding Ligon.  It applies to us and our love for you all.

Just starting

They just let us in.  Yea!

We are here

The drive in was not too bad.  Two slow downs.  Get this all the restrooms have signage for men.  No womens restrooms.  How cool is that? The check in process was very fast everyone but Mark.  Seems there are more pastors with a last name that begins with A..  There was fruit and crispy kreams for bfast.  Mark like the Asian hybrid pair.  We are staging for entry and seat selection.  Nate is a great guide.

Fellowship

There is nothing like meat to bring men together.  The brisket was helpless as a chicken in a river with pirahnas.  It was so good. I shared the burnt ends with Nate and Jason briefed us on the 'tender vs. bark'  debate.  After that we enjoyed Mary's brownies and Blue Bell ice cream.  The combination forced our collective pancreas' to grown.  It was a great dinner.  We followed it with discussions both deep and shallow across a variety of subjects.  The topics included; politcs, M22 rock crusher transmissions, how much R12 should be hoarded and 'are the body lines on this corvette sharp enough or too sharp?'.  Most suprisingly I learned that Nate and I came very close to being business partners in 2007, who knew?  Afterwards we agreed to meet at zero seven thirty hours (we are back on military time),for the 30 min trip to Grace.

We retired to the Prevost, were the discussions continued.  I think we are all sharing an anxious awe for for what is ahead of us today.  We love and mis you all so very much.  You are dear to each of us and we are always so thankful for your love.

Settling in

Once we left Burnt Well and got the doors sealed we stayed on the road.   The next attractions we the border checkpoint at tje CA border and trying to get a glimpse of the Salton Sea. Weenjoyed the mountain views outside Palm Springs and the novelty of the various wind farms. The trip was uneventful until just outside Valencia.  There we encountered several waves of traffic.  Not too bad.  One slowdown required a skillfull 5 lane change to be in the correct lane to head North.  Then we saw the one car rollover and a guy driving with a rug wedged under his car.  There is construction near our campsite and the final blocks of navigation were tricky (ask Jason about the Caddilac...).   At 3:38pm  we arrived with Marv and Nate right behind us.  We are setup in a good family oriented site.  The brisket is warming and we are all very anxious to dive into the protien.   Nate has been to this event before.  After the first day the events as a full 12hr day.  We are bracing oursleves.  Also bonus points to Mark, he just finished his first witness to an ex-motorcycle racer.  For those that are interested, the paintings have arrived and transferred. Also note screen shot from my phone and count the number of accidents that await us-prayer works.  Love to you all.  We will continue to need your prayers, this will be rigorous to be sure...
